Wondering what TV series you own or would want to own as opposed to stream?

  1. I donated all of the box sets of television series I owned to charity a few months ago. The ones I did own were:
    – Frasier
    – Cheers
    – The West Wing
I liked having Frasier and Cheers on box set because at the time they were not reliably available on UK streaming platforms in full. I bought The West Wing box set but I didn’t watch it too often because it became available on Amazon Prime.
Today, there aren’t many physical box sets I would like. They take up a lot of space. I do sometimes feel bad when a show I like changes streaming platforms though. That would be my incentive to own a box set. If something moves to another platform where I don’t have / want an account, I may opt for the box set.

  2. Link to Original Note
I actually started to keep the list of all the media that I own on my website, so I can just reference this. The series (and movies) DVD are after the books. There are some that I own in the non-physical state only, but I don’t have a handy list.
There are two general reasons, why I would prefer to own the series instead of streaming it.
If I am currently obsessed with the series
I am a type of person, that if I really liked the series or movie, then I will watch it multiple times.
I also don’t listen to almost any music. But for some of the tasks, like programming and writing, I prefer to have something on the background. One thing, that works really well for me is to have the same series in the background. Once I watched it multiple times, it can be in the background of my consciousness, so I can forget about it. But it raises my levels just enough, that I can easier concentrate on the task.
Because I do my work offline, having these episodes available without internet connection is sort of prerequisite.
When I am writing this, I have the 13 episode of the Moriarty the Patriot in the background. I must have watched over a dozen of times. If I add the background listening, like right now, it would raise the number even more.
For the purpose of language learning
If I am using a series for language learning, then I would usually prefer to own it. In the past, it used to be because I was creating the Anki cards based on the series. And the episode needed to be on my computer for this to work. These day it is mostly because it makes the handling and checking stuff easier. Mostly it makes it easier to get everything on the screen at the same time, working offline, and using any subtitles that I found, not the ones that just happen to be available on the streaming service.
Here it does not help, that streaming services do not make figuring out this easy, which is why they are usually not a good candidate. I would first need to figure out, which streaming service have it. Then if this series is available in my country. The if it has the available dub. At least the buying options, DVDs or online, list the dub and sub languages.
There is a lot of overlap in the series from both groups.
If the series is not in any of the two groups, then I don’t care. So I will take whatever option is available and then easiest for me. Easiest for me is still borrowing it from the library, so I will take this option, if available. I also still watch some series on the actual television.
