Cover Up
As the Allies began to win the war, the Nazis rushed to hide the evidence of what they were doing by killing all the witnesses. In 1944, the Soviet forces overran the first of the major camps, Majdanek. Shortly after the Soviets reported the conditions at the camp and the world heard the interviews with the survivors, the Nazis began to evacuate the camps.
During these evacuations in 1944-1945, known as death marches, they marched prisoners hundreds of miles, shooting hundreds who collapsed or couldn't keep up. To almost the last day of the war, the Germans were trying to move the prisoners to avoid them being found.
